A small workshop on Solar System Plasma Physics was held from 14-19 September, 2015, at hotel Paltinu, in the Bâlea Lac area, at the top of the Transfăgărășan road. The first incentive to organize the workshop was found during a trip to Mt. Fuji, in Japan, in the summer of 2014. The workshop, attended by scientists from TU Braunschweig, ISS Bucharest, IWF Graz, and Christian-Albrechts University Kiel, served as formal review meeting of ongoing collaborations between the respective institutions.
At the same time, the workshop provided ample room for discussion of themes related to the Sun and solar wind (Hinode and the upcoming Solar Orbiter), the Earth and missions to Geospace (Cluster, Swarm, MMS , and the ESA-M4 mission proposal THOR), as well as planets, moons, comets, and asteroids (Venus Express, Cassini-Huygens, Rosetta). While the spectrum of topics was broad, the numerous threads of common physics emphasized the need and benefits of the interaction between the three communities. The science program was completed by a couple of presentations on data analysis techniques, followed by a discussion on relevant IT infrastructure.
The workshop benefited from he majestic surroundings of the Făgărăș mountains - also called the Transylvanian Alps - and from the perfect weather conditions. Two field trips provided access to the panorama around, challenges for the fitness of the participants, as well as opportunities to continue the science discussions. A gala dinner and an evening talk on the expedition to Mt. Fuji one year ago rounded up the social program.
